The first 3 seconds of your reel decide everything
Most coaches lose the viewer before they've said anything useful. Here is the hook rule we use on 50+ client accounts, with examples you can copy today.
You spent two hours on a reel. You shot it twice, edited it, wrote the caption. It got 400 views and no DMs.
The reel was fine. The first three seconds were not.
What actually happens in 3 seconds
Instagram shows your reel to a small test group first. If they swipe away in the first three seconds, the reel dies there. If they stay, it goes to more people. That's the whole game. The quality of your advice in second 20 never gets a chance if second 2 is boring.
On our client accounts, the reels that cross 100K views have one thing in common: the hook names the viewer's problem before the coach's face has finished loading.
The three hooks that work for coaches
1. The mirror. Say the thing they're already thinking. "If you post every day and still get zero DMs, this is why."
2. The wrong belief. Attack something they think is true. "Hashtags are not why your reel didn't work."
3. The number. A specific, slightly surprising figure. "47 patients in 30 days. ₹0 on ads. Here's the content that did it."
Notice none of them start with "Hi guys" or your name. Nobody stopped scrolling for your name.
The 3-second test
Before you post, play the reel with the sound off and look away after three seconds. Can you say, in one line, who it's for and what it's about? If not, rewrite the hook. Not the whole reel. Just the first line.
Do this today
- Open your last five reels. Write down the first sentence of each.
- Rewrite each one as a mirror, a wrong belief, or a number.
- Re-post the best one with the new hook. Same footage. New first line.
That one change is usually worth more than a month of "posting more".
